Assignment Two

Spiders

Boards:

Mood boards:
Summer Vegetables

Autumn Vegetables

Art Supply Tests:
I originally planned to do my final illustrations in acrylics. I ruled out watercolour as I didn't want that kind of look and I'm not very good at watercolours. I tested out coloured pencils and Copic marker pens to see what they came out like. I was so pleased with the Copic markers I decided to go with those instead.

Compositions:

Summer Vegetables:

I knew I wanted a light fresh look for my summer vegetables illustration. I wanted the feel of a Summer picnic so played around with adding in bunting and picnic blankets.
I decided against the bunting as I just didn't like the look. I really liked the idea of vegetables on a picnic blanket and was inspired by this photo:
I had trouble with the placement of the vegetables, so kept sketching and erasing a lot. In the end I had a rough idea and decided to start sketching directly on the paper.

Autumn Vegetables:
For the Autumn vegetables I knew I wanted a rusic Farm Shop look. I was really inspired by this photo:
I thought about adding the wooden crates but it didn't seem to work compositionally and so I played around some more and decided to have the wooden base and then a chalk board behind. Again I wasn't sure how I would arrange the vegetables entirely so I did a rough sketch on the paper and played till it worked.

Final Illustrations:

Summer Salads

Winter Warmers.

Response:
All the way through this assignment I felt like I would like the 'Winter Warmers' one the best, but by the end my favourite was the 'Summer Salads'. I really like how that one turned out overall. There are elements of 'Winter Warmers' I'm pleased with but it didn't come out as strong an image as I had hoped.
I really enjoyed working with the Copic markers and feel like these were a great supply to use for this brief.
